What Does a Funeral Director Do?

When someone passes away, there are so many things to arrange, decisions to make, and details to handle—all while you’re grieving. That’s exactly where a funeral director steps in. We are the professionals who guide, support, and manage every practical part of organising a funeral. Our role goes far beyond what many people realise; we are there to carry the weight of logistics so you can focus on remembering and honouring your loved one. Here are some of the roles our funeral directors do:

Responding and Care

The role begins as soon as you or a family member makes contact. Whether the death happens at home, in a hospital, a care home, or elsewhere, our funeral directors will:

  • Arrange to collect your loved one and respectfully bring them into our care. Ensuring your loved one is treated with dignity, privacy, and care always.
  • Guide you through the very first steps: what needs to be done immediately, what paperwork is required, and what options are available to you.

At this early stage, their main job is to reassure you, listen to your needs, and make sure you don’t feel overwhelmed.

Planning and Arranging the Funeral

This is the core of their work. They will meet with you to plan every detail of the service, based on your wishes, cultural traditions, religious beliefs, or the wishes the person left behind. They will help you with:

  • Choosing the type of service: burial, cremation, memorial service, or a direct cremation.
  • Selecting elements: Type of coffin, clothing, flowers, music, service sheets, and any personal touches (like displaying photos or favourite items).
  • Venue arrangements: booking the crematorium, cemetery, church, chapel, or other location; coordinating times and access.
  • Transport: arranging the hearse, limousines, or other vehicles to carry family and guests.
  • Costs and budgets: providing clear pricing, explaining all fees, helping you understand what is included, and guiding you on financial support or payment options if needed.

They will explain every choice clearly, without pressure, and help you make decisions that feel right for you and your family.

Running the Day Smoothly

On the day of the funeral, the funeral director manages everything behind the scenes, so the service runs respectfully and on time. They:

  • Coordinate the timing: from leaving the funeral home, arrival at the venue, the service itself, and the committal or burial.
  • Lead the procession: guide the hearse and vehicles, manage guests, and make sure everyone knows where to go.
  • Work with celebrants, clergy, musicians, crematorium/cemetery staff, and florists to ensure every part happens exactly as planned.
  • Be there to support you and your family throughout, quietly stepping in if anything unexpected happens.

For you, this means you don’t have to worry about timetables, directions, or logistics—you can simply be present, grieve, and say goodbye.

At Coghlan’s, we understand that when a loved one passes away, you are entrusting us to do the very best for them and for your family. We know it is difficult to place your trust in people you may never have met before, especially for something as important and meaningful as this.

That is why we believe deeply in continuity of care. We make every effort to ensure that the person you first speak to or meet will remain your dedicated funeral director throughout the entire process. This way, you can build a genuine relationship and full trust, knowing your loved one is being cared for by the same person from start to finish.
